How to Add Services to Google Profile Properly

Learn how to add services to Google profile, organise service areas and categories, and turn clearer listings into more local calls and bookings each month.
How to Add Services to Google Profile Properly

A potential customer searches for an emergency electrician, boiler repair or wedding caterer. They see three local profiles that look broadly similar, but one clearly states the exact work it offers. That business has made it easier for the customer to choose. When you add services to Google profile, you are not filling out an optional admin field. You are giving Google and nearby customers a clearer picture of what you do.

For service-area businesses, this matters even more. You may not have a shopfront for people to visit, so your profile needs to do more of the selling before a customer ever reaches your website or picks up the phone. A well-organised service list can support better local relevance, reduce unsuitable enquiries and help turn visibility into calls, bookings and visits.

Why add services to Google profile?

Your Google Business Profile category tells Google the broad type of business you are. Your services explain the specific work available within that category. A primary category such as Plumber, for example, is useful but broad. Services such as leak repair, boiler installation, blocked drain clearance and radiator fitting give much more practical context.

Customers also use this information to make quick decisions. Someone with a burst pipe does not want to guess whether a plumber handles emergencies. Someone looking for a beauty clinic may want to know whether it offers laser hair removal, chemical peels or skin consultations before calling.

Services are not a shortcut to top rankings. Adding a long list of phrases will not compensate for the wrong category, weak reviews, poor proximity or a profile that is rarely maintained. But accurate services help reinforce relevance. They work alongside your categories, reviews, photos, posts, website content and overall prominence in the local area.

The right question is not, “How many services can I add?” It is, “Which services help the right customer understand and choose my business?”

Before adding services, get the foundations right

Start with your primary category. This is one of the strongest signals on your profile, so it should describe your core business rather than a minor offering. A tree surgeon should not choose Gardener as a primary category simply because it feels broader. A dental practice should not select Cosmetic dentist if general dentistry is the main service and cosmetic work is secondary.

Then review your additional categories. Use them only where they reflect a genuine, established part of the business. Categories and services need to agree with each other. If your category selection says one thing but your services suggest a completely different type of work, the profile becomes less clear to customers and less credible overall.

You should also check that your business name, phone number, opening hours and service area are accurate. A service area business can define the places it serves, but this is not a place to add every town in the county. Focus on the areas you can realistically cover and where you want to win work. Clear coverage is more useful than an inflated list.

How to add services to Google profile

The exact labels in Google Business Profile can change slightly, but the process is straightforward. Sign in to the Google account that manages your profile, search for your business on Google, and select Edit services or Services from the profile management options.

Choose the right service group

Google may show service groups based on your business category. Use these where they accurately fit. A heating engineer might see groups relating to heating systems, boilers or central heating. A salon might see groups for hair, nails or beauty treatments.

Group services in a way that is useful for a customer scanning quickly. You do not need to replicate every internal job code or create overly narrow variations of the same task. “Boiler repair” is helpful. “Boiler repair for a 2018 model in a two-bedroom property” is not.

Where Google allows custom services, add the specific services you sell that are missing from its suggested list. Use the name a customer would recognise, not internal trade shorthand. “Gutter cleaning” is clearer than “rainwater goods maintenance” for most household customers.

Add clear, honest service names

Each service should describe real work that your business is ready to provide. Avoid adding services because a competitor offers them, because search volume looks attractive or because you might offer them in future.

If a locksmith only handles residential work, do not add commercial lock installation. If a restaurant provides collection but not delivery, do not imply otherwise. Inaccurate services create disappointing enquiries, wasted time and poor reviews – none of which help local performance.

Use natural wording, including important local-service terms where they belong. There is no need to force town names into every service. Your service area, profile location settings and wider local signals already help establish geography. “Roof repair in Manchester, Stockport, Salford, Altrincham” is not a better service name than “Roof repair”. It is just harder to read.

Add prices only when they are meaningful

For fixed-price services, displaying a price or a “from” price can qualify leads before they contact you. This can work well for treatments, standard repairs, cleaning packages and simple installations.

For bespoke work, pricing can be misleading. A builder pricing an extension or a removal company quoting a long-distance move usually needs more detail before giving a figure. In those cases, leave the price out rather than publish a number that causes confusion. If you use a starting price, make sure it is current and genuinely available under normal conditions.

Review the customer view before moving on

Once services are saved, view the profile as a customer would. Look for duplicate entries, vague descriptions and services that no longer reflect the business. Pay particular attention after a category change, a new product line or a shift in the areas you cover.

This is also the point to check your competitors. Search the most valuable services in your target locations and compare the profiles appearing in the local results. Which categories do they use? What services do they make prominent? Are they receiving reviews that repeatedly mention a service you have not clearly listed? The aim is not to copy their profile. It is to spot where customers are being given information that yours lacks.

Write services for decisions, not keyword density

A service list should help a customer answer three questions quickly: do you provide the job they need, are you suitable for their situation, and should they contact you now?

Specificity beats repetition. A cleaning company could list end-of-tenancy cleaning, regular domestic cleaning, office cleaning and deep cleaning. Those are distinct buying needs. Listing “cleaner”, “cleaning service”, “local cleaner”, “professional cleaner” and “best cleaning company” adds little clarity and can look careless.

The same principle applies to professional services. A solicitor might list conveyancing, wills, probate and family law, rather than repeating “solicitor” in multiple forms. A clinic could distinguish between physiotherapy assessment, sports injury treatment, back pain treatment and post-operative rehabilitation where those are genuine services.

Keep your wording aligned with the language used elsewhere in your business. Your website, reviews, Google posts and profile services should describe the same core offers. Consistency makes it easier for customers to understand you and easier for your team to manage enquiries correctly.

Turn service edits into a measurable local SEO task

Adding services once and forgetting about them is better than leaving the section blank, but it is not a complete optimisation process. Review them regularly, particularly if seasonality changes demand. A gardener may want to promote patio cleaning and hedge cutting at different times of year. A heating business may need to make boiler servicing and emergency repairs more prominent before winter.

Track whether your profile visibility improves for the services and areas that matter commercially. Ranking first for a low-value job in one postcode is not the same as generating profitable enquiries across your core coverage area. Look at local rankings by service, competitor movement, calls, website clicks, direction requests where relevant, and the quality of leads coming in.

This is where a tool such as VisiLocali can replace guesswork with a clear action list. Comparing your profile with nearby competitors can show whether the issue is your service coverage, category choices, review themes, posting activity or another gap that needs attention. Make one meaningful change, monitor the result, then move to the next priority.

Common mistakes that weaken a service list

The most common mistake is treating services as a keyword dumping ground. Long, repetitive names do not make a profile more useful. They can make it look less trustworthy.

Another is listing work you do not offer or cannot provide consistently across the stated service area. This may bring more impressions, but it can also bring the wrong calls. Visibility without relevance is not a win.

Finally, do not confuse categories with services. Categories describe what your business is. Services describe what customers can hire you to do. Both need to be accurate, but the category decision usually deserves more care because it shapes the options Google presents and the searches your business is most closely associated with.

Your best service list is not the longest one. It is the one that makes a high-intent customer think, “That is exactly what I need”, then gives them a reason to call before they choose the next profile.
